Librarians measure books in centimeters because Melville Dewey, inventor of the Dewey Decimal system and a New Yorker, was a francophile.
We measure VHS, CD, and DVD containers in inches because Dewey was dead when VHS was invented.

I am the Snake Lady Librarian. To be honest, I am not actually a librarian yet. I have 13 weeks to go before I graduate with my Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science.
To those of you not in the library world, this makes very little difference. To every employer I will ever have in the library world, and almost every colleague I will know, it is the great dividing line. And in 13 weeks I shall jump over that line and walk down the aisle at Cobo Hall, moving my tassle from one side to the other. A professional. Wow.
Many thoughts on crossing that invisible yet very real line into “having a profession,” “becoming THE MAN,” buying my first Certificate of Deposit, getting published in peer-reviewed journals, and seeing how this impacts my social and family life will follow in this blog.
And I will try to be funny about it.
