What I’m Reading: Star Trek Voyager 10: Bless the Beasts

My latest reading adventure comes in the form of a juicy Startrash novel. As far as I know, none of my readers could give targ piss on this topic, but allow me to regale you with interesting tidbits that will make you smile and think you are clever, or think that I am clever, or at least that reading me was better than working – those three objectives summing up the whole point of reading most personal blogs, I think.

Legal Disclaimer – you do have to know something about Star Trek in order to feel fully clever and/or think that I am clever on this topic.

OK, let’s begin with quality. Given the givens – that this is pulp fiction, typed rather than written, with a lifespan of less than five years – I’ve gotta give it 8 out of 10 stars. The author nailed most of the characters, which doesn’t happen very often. I suspect that most of the writers hired for this type of pulp fiction do not watch the shows at all so they’re really at the mercy of whatever their editors tell them about the characters. And this babe got it goin’ on. I felt like I was really WITH the characters I worship – errr, watch – from the show.

Where the book fails is in the author’s basic misunderstanding of the Prime Directive. I mean, it’s the Prime Directive. How can you be allowed to write Star Trek books when you don’t possess a basic understanding of the Prime Directive? The dizzy broad-autor had Captain Janeway sounding like President Bush – “Ahh, we couldn’t possibly help anyone on the benighted and resource-poor continent of BLANK as that would be interferring in the natural order of their lives. The BLANK 2 ALIENS, however, can further our objectives so let’s start with a banquet.”

And I really hate it when Captain Janeway starts sounding like Bush. Makes me feel all creepy crawly and everything.

It bring the over-all stars for this title down to seven out of ten.

What I’m Listening To

I have recently developed an aversion to all music I have previously heard. Yes, you read that correctly. If the music is familiar to me I fairly break out in hives turning it off. I can’t pinpoint what exactly caused this. Over the summer I noticed that I was spinning the dial looking for “something new” and now I am finally at the point where SnakeLady-specific torture would be to lock me in a room and pipe in the local classic rock station.

I am currently listening to some classical music and some of what I believe is pop – I heard the name Christina Aguilera mentioned. I considered trying jazz again, as I hate it, and therefore run zero risk of running into familiar melodies, but I’m not that desperate yet.

This holiday season I found that I still like Christmas music as long as it is sung in interesting ways by people I’ve never heard before. So, I bought the Christmas album of a group called Third Day. Check it out on i-Tunes. A cool Christian Rock Country twist on our old favorites – some of them even recorded live! Hallalejuah!

Ego

Door bell rings on a Sunday afternoon at 4:30.
Snakelady librarian answers doorbell in slippers and housecoat with stains on it. Hair is clean but unbrushed. Snakelady librarian is not feeling well.
“Hello.”
“Hello, I brought the candy you ordered,” a 5-year old looks up at me.
“Thank you!” I say. “How is your selling going?”
“Good.”
The mother has accompanied her daughter. The mother is a dish. The mother spent at least 45 minutes on her hair this morning and it still looks perfect.
“I don’t normally look like crap,” I say ingratiatingly, “I’m sick.”
Mother cocks her head, “No problem,” she says, hurrying the child away.
I ponder my vocabulary choices.
