Hennepin Ave Bridge , Minneapolis Minnesota

Hennepin Ave Bridge , Minneapolis Minnesota

On my first night here I went for a walk. In the wrong direction. I blithely headed into the warehouse district with a shrug and a sense of adventure. Andit was boring. It was really boring. The most interesting thing I saw was the loud woman waiting for a bus.

Tonight, my last night, as I was gazing out my hotel room window and saw the Mississippi, I decided to give walking another shot. And off I headed over the bridge and straight into college country – Univ of Minn – and found everything one might want to see during a two hour stroll in a new city including a bar called “Minneapolis, Minnesota Library” right across the street from a real branch of the Minn Libraries. I’ll add that the bar also provides free wireless.

But the big find was a shop called Magus Books and Herbs that sold, interestingly enough, books and herbs. In my fantasy of how the walk would go I would find crystallized ginger to settle my stomach for the plane ride. Magus fulfilled this longing for $1.27 an ounce. All hail Minneapolis!

Boiled chicken? Broiled chicken? Chunk chicken? Barbeque chicken? The possibilities are endless when paired with the waffle.

How This Librarian Travels

I was afraid of something before I began this trip. I was afraid that I would find myself stuck on an airplane with NOTHING GOOD TO READ. I pictured it thusly: Me, pondering the airplane upholstery; Me, reduced to reading the online magazine where they would try to sell me closet organizers; Me, staring at the steward as he serves Diet Cokes and coming to definite conclusions about better ways for him to style his hair. Me, with nothing good to read.

I decided to overcome this fear with action: I brought all three books I’m currently reading. Insurance against a catastrophic reading emergency.

My carry on consists of my travel papers and precisely one paperback, one trade paperback, and a walkman and four cassettes from the book on tape I’m reading.

From Lansing to Detriot I read Book A. During my two-hour layover at Metro I read Book B. From Metro to Minneapolis I listened to Book C. I couldn’t have planned it better myself.

Off to Minnesota

I’m off to Minneapolis for three days for an E-Rate conference (those are the federal dollars that provide reduced-cost Internet connectivity to schools and libraries). See you when I get back!

Pray for the seeds, who never asked to be planted by me.
